It is the honesty in their music that first touches you to the core. Though 'The Local Train’s' sounds are a little reminiscent of Junoon, Jal, Porcupine Tree, Opeth,U2, and a few others, this Hindi Alternative /Pop Rock band’s videos and original lyrics remain with you much after you take off the headphones. And that is reason of their massive fan base online, and off it. Their tracks have a repeat value. In the last five years of their existence, ', comprising (bass guitar, backing vocals, (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Paras Thakur (lead guitar, backing vocals) have released six videos along with their debut album 'Aalas ka Pedh' in 2015. They are often extensively touring the country, and being invited to play at festivals, but off late have been busy with their second album that is slated to release in September this year. So, is there an interesting story behind the christening of The Local Train? Ramit says, “We do wish there was. Actually, our music came before the name.
We recorded a demo of a song 'Choo Lo' and wanted to upload it, so needed to have a name. And that’s when we took five minutes to think of a random name.
'The Local Train' didn’t sound all that bad to us then. The song went viral in the college circuit and since then we’ve happily stuck with it.”The band, unlike the trend of doing a lot of covers, are only into creating original numbers. They agree that the best part about being an independent band is that they can write songs about what affects them. They say, “Most of what you hear is from our own experiences and what we see happening around us. We’ve tried to be as honest as we can with our music and lyrics. India as a country is hungry for original content and if you stick to your guns then everything else will fall into place.”Here are the excerpts from the interview:Your band is around five years old. How has your journey been? The last five years have been very eventful and exciting to be honest.
We had a great run. The band stays together and we are figuring out everything by hit and trial. We released six videos along with our debut album 'Aalas ka Pedh' in September 2015 and went on an album tour to eight major cities.Along with that we were extensively touring the country playing at festivals that had invited us to perform. It was a very hectic time jumping from metro cities to far flung small towns. Being DIY does slow you down a bit, but a lot of learning and growth has shaped us over the years. What made you come up with the name 'The Local Train'?To be honest, before the band name came the music!
We recorded a demo of a song and wanted to upload it to MySpace. The song was called 'Choo Lo' and that's when we took five minutes to think up of a random name.' The Local Train' didn't sound all that bad to us then. The song went viral in the college circuit and since then we've been happily stuck with the name.
So we do wish there was an interesting story behind our christening but there isn't.What, who inspires your music? The best part about being an independent band is that we can write songs about what affects us. Most of what you hear is from our own experiences and what we see happening around us. We've tried to be as honest as we can with our music and lyrics. With a wide age gap in the band, all of us had different influences in terms of music as well. So our music also has an influence of everything we heard growing up from Nirvana, Aerosmith, Porcupine Tree, Opeth,U2, Lucky Ali to Indian Ocean, Alt-J, The 1975 and what not.Mainstream music in our country is mostly Bollywood. What is your take on that? The majority of being heard is coming out of the film industry. While that's led to some amazing art, we feel that there is scope for a parallel independent industry that's all about the music. It just needs the right approach and patronage.
Your popularity online – what helped you guys garner so many fans? We've been making original music for a while now and following a simple strategy - try and write songs to the best of our capabilities, make music videos and release them online on youtube! We never expected to get such a strong fan base and we're grateful to everyone that's helped us spread our music. We've been touring the country extensively as well and playing our music live throughout. We feel the audience is the best judge, we'll keep making more content and hopefully widening our fan base.Do you only do originals or also cover versions of popular numbers? The band from day one got together to make original music. We get invited to play live shows only for the music that we've released and that's our focus as well. Of course, a couple of times, we've covered songs that we really enjoy playing, live, but it's not what we do.What about cover versions? What do you have to say about them? It's a lot of fun to rehash songs and add your own twist to it. Although we're just afraid that it might become a fad that brings the wrong ideology in the scene. It's a longer struggle, maybe, to get recognised for your original music, but it's what is needed.Even in Bollywood you know there are songs that'll last a season and songs that will last many lifetimes over.
India as a country is hungry for original content and if you stick to your guns then everything else will fall into place.Tell us about your upcoming projects. We are writing the second album as of now. In fact, the first single 'Khudi' from the second album is already out on major streaming platforms and is doing fairly well.As far as the second album goes, It's a challenge we're giving ourselves, after the debut album. We all want to experiment with our sound and find our space. We've already started playing a few songs live from the second album and we're getting a really good response. We'll always write about stuff that we experience in life and this time we're trying to touch on themes like individualism, existentialism and the belief systems people hold while still trying to sound relevant.
